Actually it was not a bad choice and if you weren't selected and feel slighted there's a clear message people. You are considered the bottom half of the team or not connected. Now on the flip side they saved you a bunch of money and now you know where you are in the pecking order. You also won't be moving up to the top team anytime soon.
